"Our memory is never fully 'ours'."

Stupid essay question.

1 hand in is over and more pile up.
Just finished a brief for Global markets, basically having to invent something which hasn't yet been invented yet before we could make an advertisement campaign for it. This worried me for about 3 weeks then I finally understood what was being asked of me and got on with it. I chose something which interested ME, and that was music. So I came up with the idea of an app for your phone which was for HMV, you take a photo of any HMV advert which you see and you are taken to a page of gig listings for the artist shown on the advert. Instant access to live music, basically. "Music at your fingertip."

So it happened.

2 years ago I applied for the Advertising course at Salford University. I ended up leaving the interview upset and confused, the 3 years I spent at Nelson and Colne College was a complete waste of time...although I did have the best time. My work wasn't up to scratch, it wasn't good quality and it most definitely wasn't Advertising or even Graphic Design.
This year I had another chance of an interview for Advertising after the 2 years of HND Graphics, which although the 2nd year was absolute shit, I somehow managed to get onto the Advertising course with ease. Petra and Tim were kicking arse tutors and bloody well kicked me into Graphic Design. 2nd year's half arsed job of a tutor, Justin, was a bit too hazy in his own dream world of showing off his own work and talking and talking and talking...about himself.
So here we go, 2 years of advertising...

This brief was for Computing, and usually things don't work out well for me in this lesson. This one was to design your own website and create it in Flash.
I decided to make my own illustrations of things which I take interest in. Like photography, clothes, make up and personal things like my glasses, and my interest in retro objects like the telephone which I used.
I kept the theme very simplistic and paid particular interest in line drawings.

Illustration is something I try to do when I have a little bit of spare time, I have done much more but I lost a lot of them through time. The top two are ones I have done for no particular reason. The bottom two were for the personal project brief I completed at Uni, I put a lot of effort into the bottom two and were completely hand drawn. Unfortunately my tutor didn't feel the same way about them as I did and I got a heartbreaking grade for them.

Miss Selfridge re-design

This brief was to re-design the corporate identity for Miss Selfridge. I thought the shop's identity was already successful but maybe needed just a tiny bit of development. We were asked to design a new logo and make a poster plus POS for it.
The new logo was kept in a handwritten style, and as I couldn't find a Type which I was completely happy with, I tweaked one in Illustrator to make it exactly how I wanted it.
I wanted the new identity to be Vintage style and very pretty and girly. Lace and pastel pinks were a big part in this brief, and I also focused on the festival theme as the time of year I made this was suitable for it.

ASDA re-design

For this project at Uni, we were asked to re-design ASDA's own brand of toiletries packaging.
After loads and loads and loads of development on mark making I finally perfected my designs. I wanted to convey the products as the textures you link them with. So bubbles for Shampoo, a fluffy bubble for Shaving Foam, the smooth creamy line for Body Lotion and Hand Cream and the glide of a Deodorant.

Illustrations for Puffin classic books.

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" I wanted to stay away from the usual image of Holly looking like Audrey Hepburn for this book cover, I read the book and found out about Holly's eyes, and how beautiful and interesting they sounded so I experimented with watercolours to achieve the same as what they were described in the book.

"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" here I focused on the passion which was missing from their lives in this story. I wanted to highlight the main parts of Maggie, I made the bra noticeable as she wanted to seduce her husband and make him want her again, also I focused on the lips of Maggie making them a kiss mark. This was because in the story Maggie kisses her husband and he wipes it off.

"One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest", I struggled quite a bit with creating a suitable enough image for this book. I found that on the ward the only things which were in the patient's lives were, TV, playing cards and smoking. I experimented with playing cards trying to make cigarette burns on the actual card but I couldn't make a good enough image. I thought about making the actual image of a card look fuzzy, almost dream like as if you think you're going crazy.

"007 You only Live Twice" This was another which I struggled with at first to create an image for. I couldn't find the book to read so I had to watch the film and I didn't get much from it. I found it quite boring and hard to concentrate. I ended up using a stereotypical Bond gun and integrating a traditional Japanese flower, as the story is set in Japan.

Feel Good drinks 2010

This was part of a brief which Feel Good drinks had actually set for students, they wanted their drinks to be known for using real fruit and not adding sugar to their drinks unlike most soft drink companies.
I took a look at past designs for them and their current theme, so after a few design developments I came up with these 2 for the still drinks. I kept the bright, colourful, fun theme which they have used throughout. I then needed to create a poster for the sparkling drinks, and after a few developments in illustrator I created this design.

Heinz Brief 2009

This brief was to create a series of advertisements for Heinz. Again, my designs were based around a very simplistic theme.
These specific ones were to be designed for Billboards.
I was then also asked to design a separate advertisement for a magazine.

The final part of the brief was to make a banner for the web, I chose to use an earlier photograph I had used in idea development for Tomato Soup. I thought it was really striking.

Tetley Brief

This is another brief from the HND course, in my first year. We were asked to create a promotional poster to be aimed at students, I explored a range of ideas to connect to students, from identifying what they eat and drink to which cup they use to identify each other's character.
This idea seemed to fit the best, I like to use simplified designs when it comes to Advertising. I get a bit scared that the design will look too tacky and over done. With this advertisement its easy on the eye and straight to the point. Hopefully a little humourous too...

Dance House brief 2008

This brief was to create a new logo for the Dance House theatre in Manchester, we were allowed to pick whichever theatre we wanted. This theatre had such a dated logo so I chose it. My sketches began with images from Ballerinas, from the actual website of theirs. I focused on combining the two, using the ribbon from the ballerina slipper to join with the image of a house.
We were then asked to design a poster for a certain show to be performed at the theatre, I thought Salome would be the most interesting to use and as its linked with Art Nouveau I couldn't think of any other reason not to use it.
I took the photograph myself, I wanted to create an eerie, evil effect. Emphasizing the fact that Salome kissed the beheaded lover she was infatuated with.
